Plastic Surgery: Results

Most patients who undergo plastic surgery are often motivated by the outcome rather than the procedure itself. Although, both aspects of plastic surgery are important, it is essential that you understand that outcomes depend on how the treatment is performed. Please get enough informed about the procedure you are interested in. Take an active part on your treatment to make your surgery as successful as possible. Patients who do a lot of research are able to optimize the treatment as they know what to expect according to their particular conditions. Remember every patient is different, and as an individual you have qualities and characteristics only you possess. Good results in plastic surgery satisfy both the patient and the surgeon. You must have a clear understanding about your procedure according to your height, weight, age and physical conditions.

Your surgeon will work with you to recommend the procedure that is right for you. Remember that medicine practice must always emphasize on safeguarding the health and welfare of patients. For a serious and responsible physician your health is first priority. Sometimes, plastic surgeons may decline to operate on individuals who seek to achieve goals that cannot be obtained, or patients who want unnecessary procedures or have unrealistic expectations. Successful plastic surgery is the result of good rapport between patient and surgeon. There is no physician´s expertise or well-intentioned medical purpose that can be successful if the real patient´s expectations are misunderstood. For that reason, you must be sure you and your surgeon clearly understand each other´s expectations. Clearly discuss your doubts and let your surgeon answers your questions about your specific needs. Schedule as many appointments as you feel you need. Consult every media your doctor offers to do your research to convince yourself that you and your surgeon have found a common ground.

Please remember that each and every person has a different healing process. Depending on metabolic, hormonal, or physiological factors, the scarring and blood circulation response may vary from patient to patient. Improving, recovering and maintaining health status is the purpose of plastic surgery. Plastic surgery, whether cosmetic or reconstructive, means an emotional event. And although plastic surgeons strive to improve patient´s appearance and self-image through surgical procedures, no one ever can guarantee a 100 percent success. Usually, 95% of patients report satisfaction with the outcome of their procedures, for 3% of patients the outcome is appropriate, and for 2% of patients the outcome is unsatisfactory and may require a new surgical procedure. Remember, every surgery leaves a scar.

Sometimes, it is impossible for the surgeon to predict how an incision will develop. Some of them can become unattractive, notorious or hypertrophic. Even using the latest techniques or medical equipment, some scarring should be expected from plastic surgery. Healing process is not necessarily under the control of the surgeon. Although it is unusual for patients to be dissatisfied with the scarring, so the surgeon always tries to minimize or hide scars, in some cases a revision could be necessary.

Please, give your body enough time to recover so that you can adequately judge the results from surgery. You must understand that swelling and bruising on the operated area may persist for some time. Usually bruising will diminish during the first days, but swelling may take some time to completely resolve. For most of plastic surgery procedures, final results may appear only after a year or more. Your surgeon will advise you which type of treatment is appropriate for you, in order to improve results and accelerate the healing process.
