Gynecomastia correction surgery preparation
It is considered you are in surgery from the moment you arrive to the surgical area until the moment you have sufficiently recovered from anesthesia. Before surgery, your surgeon, anesthesiologist and the nursing staff will meet you in the pre-operative area to discuss your medical condition and answer any question.
The anesthesia
What kind of anesthesia is used in the gynecomastia correction surgery?
The gynecomastia correction surgery is performed under general anesthesia with intravenous induction and inhalation anesthesia. You will sleep through the entire operation, feeling no pain and remaining absolutely relaxed.
The section about Anesthesia provides complete information on this medical practice along with recommendations and instructions.
Patient preparation before surgery
* Patient preparation includes treating the surgical site before surgery, using appropriate antiseptic agents for skin preparation.
* In the operating room the intravenous therapy or IV will be initiated. The IV is the giving of liquid substances directly into a vein. Through a needle you will receive saline solution, anesthesia, and other medications you may need during surgery.
How long does gynecomastia correction surgery take?
Gynecomastia correction surgery may take 1-2 hours to complete, but it may take longer if other procedures are also being performed at the same time.

Treatment of gynecomastia
Once the causes of gynecomastia have been assessed, the treatment is focused on the elimination of the potential trigger factors. Surgery becomes the ultimate option for gynecomastia treatment. If surgical option has been considered, a complete preoperative assessment is performed.

Surgical treatment for gynecomastia correction
The surgical treatment will depend upon the individual patient´s characteristics. For young patients with slightly glandular tissue accumulation, the intra-areolar technique or liposuction is performed. While those patients with excess skin and skin laxity may require skin resection. In cases of severe gynecomastia (saggy skin and enlarged breasts), especially in obese patients that have lost a great deal of weight, the surgeon may consider skin resection along with nipple relocation or nipple grafting. Severe gynecomastia can also be treated by subcutaneous mastectomy. The surgeon will determine beforehand which technique best suits the patient´s needs.
In some cases a revision surgery may be needed to improve the results. The patient and his family are informed about this possibility. Recent advances in surgical practice and surgical instruments provide better and minimally invasive techniques for treating gynecomastia. Liposuction-assisted mastectomy is a commonly used technique for many cases of gynecomastia. This technique allows removal of fat tissue from the breasts.
General considerations on gynecomastia correction surgery
The patient who has considered the gynecomastia correction surgery must understand that:
| |
|
1 |
Every surgical procedure involves a scar. |
| |
|
2 |
Breast symmetry depends very much upon the pre-existing conditions of symmetry. The surgeon will strive to improve shape and position of the breasts maintaining their balance and proportion. |
| |
|
3 |
The patient is informed beforehand about the technique to be performed during surgery. However, modifications to the standard technique may be performed in the surgical approach in order to improve the results. |
| |
|
4 |
Major reductions may involve the removal of significant amount of skin which requires larger incisions and more conspicuous scars. The patient may choose to accept a minimum excess of skin, in order to avoid a larger incision. |
| |
|
5 |
Drainage tubes may be placed to draw off excess of fluids. |
| |
|
6 |
Final results may appear only after 6 months or one year. |
| |
|
7 |
Regardless of the scarring, most patients choose gynecomastia correction surgery to restore a male breast appearance. |
| |
|
8 |
A revision surgery may be needed to improve the results. |
| |
|
9 |
The revision surgery can only be performed 6-12 months after the first procedure. Healing time is needed for tissues to contract and adjust. |
