Calf Implant Surgery Preparation

It is considered you are in surgery from the moment you arrive to the surgical area until the moment you have sufficiently recovered from anesthesia. Before surgery, your surgeon, anesthesiologist and the nursing staff will meet you in the pre-operative area to discuss your medical condition and answer any question.

What kind of anesthesia is used for calf implant surgery?

Calf implant surgery is performed under epidural or peridural anesthesia. You will sleep through the entire operation, feeling no pain and remaining absolutely relaxed.

This procedure may take 2-3 hours

The procedure

How is the calf implant surgery performed?

The calf implant is inserted through the crease behind the knee, which forms when knee flexion occurs. The incision is made in such a way that this become imperceptible within time. The incision guides the plane of dissection to create a pocket, between the muscle and the subcutaneous tissue, to place the implant. The implant may be also placed under the gastrocnemius muscle, also called calf muscle.
Once the implant is in place, the incision is closed in layers with soft sutures. A compressive bandage is places, which must be used day and night during four weeks, and later only during night for two weeks more. In some cases, the surgeon may recommend a liposuction to contour legs.
